Graham memorializes and shares thoughts and feelings in those minutes, hours, days, months & years after his dad died. His dad died suddenly, it was shocking, paralyzing and forever life changing.
This song is a collaboration between Graham and his dad. Inspired by his dad while he was here and inspired by that which surrounds you when someone like that dies.
beautiful, beautiful santa clarita
never been anything sweeter.
(to dad:)
saw these cars and i think of you
talkin' 'bout the revolution,
ice cream cones and polar bears;
condiments and constitutions.
(to mom:)
i know why you're talkin' like
the sun don't shine as bright...
why hurricanes and hippie things
bring tears into your eyes now.
(to all:)
walk in the room with the sun, sun
exhale into his lungs and...
"is he dead? is he dead?" she said.
'cause your daddy don't run run run, no.
tick, tick, as we talk in circles.
time walks in the wrong direction.
do what you wanna do...
now your daddy don't run run run, no.
i'm gonna make a million dollars.
i'm gonna make a million dollars.
it's gonna be better this time, you'll see...
it's gonna be better this time...
because your breeze comes through my window screen...
and your voice talks to me in my sleep when i dream... so.
said your name, all shiny vinyl.
guitars and brooklyn dodgers.
do what you wanna do...
now your daddy don't run run run, no.
tick, tick, as we talk in circles.
time walks in the wrong direction.
do what you wanna do...
now your daddy don't run run run, no.
i know you've gotta leave this time, everybody's gotta leave some time, but your leavin's leavin' me without "goodbye."
i know you've gotta leave this time, everybody's gotta leave some time, but you left me and i just can't say goodbye.
beautiful, beautiful santa clarita...
never been anything sweeter.
when i was little, he would sometimes break out singing about our home town in the voice of a very proper/pompous old lady. it was terrible and funny and it always makes me smile thinking about him doing it.
the song he'd sing had seven words:
"beautiful santa clarita... never been anything sweeter."
he was a great and loving person.
